One of last year's best debut singles would've had to have been courtesy of Wollongong five-piece DROVES, who with their driving and long-winded debut single Time, gave us an emotive cry of eerie synth-rock that felt like the band introducing themselves as a powerful force-to-be in Australian indie. Ever since Time's arrival, the ensemble have thrived and strived - playing Wollongong institution Yours & Owls Festival, doing their fair spot of touring, and lapping up a bunch of attention on triple j and the likes; something that looks set to continue as they rise again with their second track (and first for 2019), Bloodline.
In comparison to their first single, Bloodline is notably more upbeat and synth-driven, fleshing out the electronic teasings of their debut as they take influence from the haunting synth-pop of the 80s and layer them with indie-rock notes that give us something completely unexpected and unique to much of the Australian indie circuit. It's also a track that really highlights their band's knack for creating music on the eerie, thriller side of things, with the cinematic synth chords and softly-sung vocals adding this horror edge that really solidifies their uniqueness in the process. After an explosive 2018, DROVES are perfectly set up for what's bound to be an even bigger year ahead, and with their second single and its Teel Studios-directed video clip, we haven't been so sure of a band's promise in a long, long time. Watch the single's video clip below, and catch them at dates through April and May.
